Movies, Internet Marketing, and Hype

Let me just say this.  I thought the movie Twilight SUCKED.  Now I’m not trying to be “cute” and say it sucked cause it was about Vampires, but the movie was HORRIBLE!  No joke.

But there’s a marketing lesson we can learn from this.

I was really excited to watch this movie cause there was soooo much hype around it.  How it’s the next Harry Potter and is going to rock, blah blah blah.  I mean it even pulled in  $70 million it’s opening weekend in the Box Office.  How it’s the next Harry Potter and is going to rock, blah blah blah.

There was so much hype around it.  I thought this was going to be THE best movie of the year and pass up the movie “RockNRolla” as the best movie of the year for me.  RockNRolla was super amazing and Guy Ritchie is a genius  Problem was they build no buzz for it.

Here’s the thing about Twilight, they did a PHENOMENAL job reaching their target audience:  16 year old Teenage Girls.  But what about the rest of us?  Well when I watched it, you heard the 16 year old girls giggling and you got some “boo’s” from people at the end of our showing.  It was hilarious.

Here’s a few things I think we can learn:

1.  If you have a phenomenal product (RockNRolla) but don’t know how to build buzz, build excitement and momentum, you might not have the results you were expecting.

2.  If you build insane buzz and hype (Twilight), you better make sure that you’re product or service can back up all the hype when you launch it.

I think Twilight did what it was suppose to do, build a massive following, do just “ok” with its product, and hopefully the kids get some acting lessons cause now they’re ‘launching’ another product – the Sequel (LOL).

You wanna really win in business?

Build massive hype, massive buzz, massive momentum, and provide massive value with your product or service.

Not only will you build your tribe, they’ll also be that much more motivated to go recruit others to your tribe.  Allow your tribe to have a sense of ownership when you launch products, create new services, pump out content.  They’ll love you forever and your business will KILL IT in any economy!

I work with small store owners. We go door-to-door. We find great stores, with great products and services, but they’re struggling and some of them are dying… why? Nobody knows that they even exist. They don’t know how to promote their biz. Don’t know where to start. Don’t know about social media. Don’t know that they don’t have to spend much money to market.

We must teach them and they must learn how to create Buzz.

I’m doing my part and what about the rest of you Marketers?

    Jandro,

Words of wisdom spoken in the blog post. You hit the nail on the head. I can remember several nights ago that you introduced me to Rock N Rolla. I had not heard anything about it. Now let me temper that by stating that I really do not watch much television, so if there were ads or marketing copy – I missed it. In addition, I can say that I had not seen any material for it online either. Perhaps I am on the wrong sites, who knows. The point is, I learned about Rock N Rolla through my social connections with you via twitter and skype IM. Having seen the trailer, I am blown away by how this movie looks. The creators of Rock N Rolla can credit the powers of social connections, social media, IM conversations, and frankly, you (Alejandro) as the reason for one more ticket sale. I plan on seeing it very soon. I caught the buzz for this movie from you. Maybe this is what they had planned all along? Who knows.

As for twilight – meh. I’m a hardcore Lost Boys fan and I really don’t care to see any other vampire films, depsite how incredible people say this film is. I can also say that I had not heard of this film either. Perhaps I need to watch more television or perhaps the marketers spent their dollars courting the 16 year old female market by placing advertisements on related sites. In that case, I certainly would have missed these ads.
