1 Year ago today my beautiful baby girl Sadie Loren Reyes came into this world. That day completely changed my life FOREVER. I wrote about “The Most Important Day Of My Life”

The day after she was born I did a Live Video Broadcast (go to 26:00 in the video below) for my friends and family and what happened next was pretty crazy. You gotta understand that before this I had barely just started my blog and was trying to “make it happen” online…

I ended up tweeting that event and a lot of marketers, bloggers, & other folks from twitter ended up coming to watch this ustream. This wasn’t a marketing ploy or anything, I was just really excited that I was able to utilize Social Media to show off Sadie to my friends and family.

The next day, I got soooooo many emails, tweets, dm’s, phone calls from people saying “Wow that was the coolest thing ever,” “I love your authenticy Alejandro” and my following online grew because of my daughter. Pretty crazy huh?

Ever since then I knew that the key to making things happen in the Social Media arena is simple: Be transparent, invite people into your life, and if you can put a smile on their face, you’ve won their hearts.

So I attribute a TON of my online success to my Sadie!

Sadie, I love you so much, you’ve changed mine and your Mother’s life FOREVER. Happy Birthday Princess!!

Here’s some videos and some pictures of Sadie over the last year

Are you one who is carefully selecting the blogs you visit and comment on because they have ‘Do-Follow’ set up? Yes, I know, you get links this way – but are you really contributing to building a solid business and brand? If you are aiming for adding links in order to get better page ranking so that you can feed viewers to your ads, maybe you are gaining a little. But will they ever return? If you don’t make the effort to create value on your site, you will be forever seeking first time viewers because that’s all you will have – is that what you want?

I got started on this topic because of a post on one of the blogs I read pertaining to blogging. Blogger Maki of DoshDosh just put up a post titled, “The Unhealthy Obsession With Do Follow Links” which I suggest you go read right after you are done here. I won’t repeat everything he said here but just say, he poses the question of the validity of restricting yourself to commenting only on blogs with Do Follow set up for the express purpose of getting back links. And with the validity of the short spammy comments that don’t contribute to the conversation.

Now I’m certainly not going to try to put words in Maki’s mouth, you should read his post for yourself, but I can tell you my take on this, which I’m suspecting may not be too far off of his based on what he has said. With this obsession for link building many are fooling themselves into thinking they are actually building something that will last. First, I wonder how long it will take Google to come up with a method that detects and qualifies comments? They have already found ways to lock out other forms of spammy activity – can you say Google Slap!

Secondly, are you aware of how things are shifting within the online marketing world? With all the social networking sites exploding all around us people are showing that people respond to people more than some artificial hype. Is this full circle? We are back to basic word of mouth being the most potent mode of marketing. For years the internet marketing tried to cover over this with all the hype that was developed just to get eyeballs on to a page. However, if you are looking to build a real business with a meaningful brand this kind of focus is short sighted.

I have only been involved online and learning about online marketing for about 3 years but have seen major shifts take place in how it is being done successfully. Even the top ‘gurus’ in the niches most highly susceptible to hype style marketing, ‘Internet Marketing’ and ‘Work From Home’ have shifted to providing tons of quality information for free. It appears that the way forward if you want to build a brand for yourself and your business, is to be real, and provide quality and value.

And certainly one way to bring value to your site or blog and to the readers, is to actually participate in and contribute to discussions that benefit those people. When you put intelligent ideas in your comments readers will be more likely to follow your link to your blog to see what else of value you have to offer. I think, in the end, that a real human following from a comment is of higher value than a Google Bot. It’s real people who ultimately do business with us, are we assisting them with this action or are we hoping to accidentally capture them? Are you involved with what your audience needs and wants? Are you helping them get it? Are you directing them to other useful sources?

Here’s the trick, if you want to get good at something you must immerse yourself in it. And it can be very helpful to align yourself with others who are doing the same. You can actually kind of form a mastermind alliance with others just by who you associate with in your blogging. Follow those who are deeply in tune with and developing that which you are interested in and get involved by making comments on their blogs and making posts on your blog that really contribute to the conversation. And this must be more than, “really cool post man!” . . . ‘Dude’, come on, wake up!

If you are working on building yourself and your sites as your brand, the shallow comments will do you little good, in fact they will more likely knock you down a few points with your readers. You may not have figured this out yet, but if Google can program it’s computers to pinpoint the shams real humans can do it too – and usually quicker. Now if you are operating with a business model that only cares about traffic, any traffic, to get ad clicks, then the shallow, “cool man” comments will get you some mechanical links. Go for it, as long as it lasts.

But realize that at some point more bloggers will set up filters to not allow short comments – it’s only a matter of time. Because what happens on popular blogs is that someone who really cares about the topic and wants to learn more from reading the comments, like the author, must wade through all the trash. Just like the famed ‘Google Smack’ on all the trash site developers, the system, which here on the net is ultimately people, will tire of wading through the trash.

Get a clue from what is going on in the online world of business, people are fast realizing that the best way to build a business and a respectable brand is to be real. Sure we all click on ads and we marketers use ads, I don’t think that will go away, but the trend is towards offering quality and value.

Your blog readers will respect you far more if they see that you are involved with real meaty discussions with others that are adding value to the subject.

If you are afraid that you will loose your blog readers to another blog if you mention it in your posts, you are missing the big picture. You will gain more respect by leading them to other high quality resources, and if you are really contributing – they will have a reason to stay with you, both for your recommendations and your contribution. Short sighted fear will hold you back!

By getting involved in quality interactions with other bloggers you are creating collaboration, and through collaboration everyone wins. You really are tapping into the ‘mastermind’ concept even if not officially set up. When a group of minds get together on a particular subject they are each enhanced by the interaction. Ideas beget ideas and spark more ideas much faster than each individual can alone. And everyone reading this interaction gains more as well.

You can also apply all this too articles as well. Yes it’s great how you can get a nice link from posting an article on an article directory, but what you really want is real live readers that are impressed enough to click on the link at the bottom and go to your page. The article has already pre-qualified them, they are now a better viewer or your page than one that came from a search.

So, I guess the first thing to decide is, what is the business model you want to operate with? Will you continue to chase traffic alone or will you build a brand which becomes viral in it’s own right where people invite people.

Real time web is evolving quickly and being offered in more and more places. As we all experience how everything is moving faster and faster communication on the web gets quicker. At one time, long ago, we thought email and RSS feeds were an efficient way to get information out there, but now there is the speed of Twitter. How will this increased speed help your social networking and marketing is the question?

Frederic Lardinois, in his post “Five Sites that Let You Experience the Real-Time Web Today” details some of the fast, near real time communication sites operating today. The question becomes, do you really need communication to be this fast? Does it have a purpose? Or is it all just an example of creative oneupmanship, where we keep going faster just because we can.

Is the speed of communication holding you down? Or do you just find it hard to keep up with now? Have you been upset with RSS feeds only updating about every hour? If you have, Notifizious may just be what you are looking for.

As we see on Twitter, there seem to be two general uses, one of holding conversations which is essentially a chat. And the other of posting messages, which the speed of delivery is usually not so critical.

For those who have a need for fast, or just want it because it’s there:

* Notifixious is a very new service and still has limitations where it can be used, but if you want it fast -might see if you can give it a try.

* Monitter is interesting – quite addictive. You can set any keywords you want to follow on Twitter and it pulls them all in for you. You choose, a tool or a distraction!

* And for those who have stayed away from Facebook because it’s too slow on the update- coming soon, real time updates of users news feeds.

As with everything, these are tools that we each choose how to use for ourselves, so it is us alone that must ask the important questions;

* Do we have a need to receive immediate information?
* Do we have a need to transfer information out immediately?
* Does a given service offer the speed that supports it’s use, or
* Does the increased speed open up new uses?
* How much time should I spend in front of it?

As with any service, I think these communication services will eventually get a thumbs up or down from the online world depending on their usefulness. I must admit, all these new faster services are real neat, but they can be addictive ending up consuming more of our time rather than saving it. I suggest, don’t get involved just because it’s there, rather choose the communication methods that best serve your needs.

This phenomenon called social networking has absolutely exploded I the last couple of years and the thing is, I think it’s just getting started. If you look at the growth of social networking just in the last six months, it will floor you. Two or three years ago many people were complaining that all this online activity and attention was just serving to isolate people because it was keeping them away from social activities.

Now look what happened, we humans seem to have automatically solved the problem. Or should I say we evolved into the solution. When this many people move in one direction this quickly, it’s humanity talking! We people need to interact, communicate and collaborate, it’s how we are built. And even thought this Internet thing first appeared to be the grand ‘separator’ there had to have been this response to our basic human need growing deep within, just waiting for us to discover it and allow it to blossom. I know, this is pretty ‘big picture’ thinking here, but I believe everything has purpose and just because we can’t see it – it’s there.

Do you realize how much easier it is to locate people that have similar interest to yours? Look, when I was in high school, and many consider me an ‘older guy’ now even though I’m only about halfway ‘there’, many kids were really isolated is they were a little more unique than average. It was a physical, as far as you can walk or maybe drive, area that you had to function in. And even then it would be difficult to find someone just a couple miles away at a different school that shared some of your unique interests.

A persons interests were not listed in the phone book . . . how did you find them? There were many brilliant, creative individuals stuck out there alone with no one to help further develop their thoughts. Not that individuals can’t and don’t do many wondrous things individually, collaborating expands the thinking of all involved much faster.

Do you realize the power in this? Have you ever studied about the ‘mastermind’ concept? Author Napoleon Hill wrote about it in his classic “Think And Grow Rich” detailing how the mental power of a group of minds working in alignment with a specific intention far surpassed the basic mathematical combination of the individual participants minds. Some say the resulting thought capability of a group increases geometrically.

Now why did I bring this mastermind thing up here? Think about it, just a few years ago it was hard to find someone who shared a unique interest, now you can locate thousand of those like minded individuals. Then add in to this how we humans progress, in anything. We build on what we know, and when several people are together, the group knows more about the specific subject. Add to that the mastermind affect and any idea develops faster. People feed off of each others ideas allowing creativity to blossom.

This vast system of interlinking has just opened the flood gate to human progress. The speed at which progress moves forward has just picked up an other comma. And we are here to participate in it and work with it, so we better understand it and learn how as a business we can benefit.

OK, back to my original thought about this article, monetizing the social movement. And this is not so off what I have just been talking about as the exchange of information, tools, resources and materials is all part of our interaction as we feed and support each others unique interests. Yes commerce is involved in the physical functions of our growth and evolution.

Then, the more successful one can become in delivering their own unique resources to others who desire them, the more they can do in all areas of their life, and that’s a good thing. If this would be you, wanting to be very successful at mastering delivery within this social system on hyper drive, I stumbled across a wonderful blog post about monetizing all this socializing we are doing, which you must read. I’m not even going to take any more of your attention to give my highlights and interpretation, just go see what blogger Dosh Dosh has to say on the subject – it’s really quite good.

The amazing thing that happened to me was, stumbling across the Dosh Dosh blog post as I was thinking about that very topic, actually it was presented to me – amazing!

Salwa is a digital artist, designer, blogger, and writer from U.K. She authors a blog at www.blogriffic.com. She is also on twitter

With the recent increase in social media programs, internet marketers are beginning to target social media sites for their marketing campaigns. But how exactly do you market your products through social media?

Most advertisements in social media are presented casually. Many ads don’t even have hyperlinks, and the viewers actually have to type in your URL into their internet browser. While you probably won’t get as much traffic as you would with a normal hyperlink advertisement, those who view your site will be HIGHLY targeted, as they have taken the time to visit your site.

Most social media marketing is done through YouTube. Short ads are often added to the beginning or end of videos, or even mixed in to the middle. Be warned that advertisements in videos can be very annoying to viewers, so don’t over do it. One small, tasteful ad in each video will suffice. Do not overwhelm your viewers with tons of long ads.

Many types of social media marketing do not appear to be done by the actual promoter, but rather the general public. Often a “fake grass roots” movement is started intentionally by a marketer. A blog or other webpage will be created, with a “normal guy” talking about a specific product. Statistically, people are more likely to purchase something recommended by a “normal dude” that they can relate to, rather than an advertiser. Viral videos are often used as well in order to promote a specific product or website.

The entire goal of marketing in social media is to be the next big thing. The internet is constantly changing, and new trends seem to spring up every day. If your marketing campaign is part of the latest trend, you can receive millions of visitors. Do not underestimate the power of suggestion. If whatever you produced is considered by the public interesting or funny enough to recommend to a friend, you can expect to see your traffic and sales rising rapidly.

As I said, YouTube videos are the most common medium for social media marketing. But why exactly is this? Because popular videos on YouTube receive massive amounts of views within hours. The top videos of the day usually have from 100,000-500,000 videos within the first 24 hours. As with any form of advertising, not everyone who views your ad will actually click on it. In my personal experience, a normal click through for YouTube videos is about 20-30%. This means that out of those 100,000+ views, you will receive 20,000-30,000 unique visitors to your site, all within 24 hours. Of course the click through rate will change drastically depending on ad placement, video subject, quality, etc, but if a popular video has your product in it, you can expect massive amounts of traffic.

Opinions vary as to whether or not social media is a good medium for internet marketing. Some think that traditional advertising works better, while some prefer social media. However, with social media on the rise, I expect that more people will be marketing through social media sites.

Shark Attacks Predicted To Decline With The Economic Crisis

The newscaster said shark attacks are directly related to the economy, because in order to have a shark attack two conditions apply:

People Have To Be In The Water

Sharks Have To Be Where People Are

Then he proceeded to explain that as the economy declines less people go to the beach (People In The Water), because they don’t have the money. He followed that up with a stupid line that basically disproved his theory, “But surfers are not deterred by the economy, and are out in the water everyday, regardless of the economy, so they stand to have a much greater risk for shark attacks!”

Shock Attack!

Stories like the above are ways the television and radio news teams sucker you in to listen to the entire newscast by giving you a teaser headline, “Economists Predict Decline In Shark Attacks In 2009! The complete story after these commercials.” They just baited you with a shocker.

First, why would an economist be predicting shark attacks?

Second, why are shark attacks declining?

Shocking headlines tend to grab your attention and pull you in. You are going along on your merry way and you hear something that does not make complete sense to you. You have to know more. They baited you. You listen and they tease you until you are fully hooked, you listen all the way through the story until the stupid anticlimactic conclusion and you leave ticked off that you wasted your time. But they got you.

Tweeting A Big Juicy Worm!

Social media is like that, you can keep people engaged with golden nuggets that pull people in. You can ask open ended questions that require people to reply to you. Tell funny stories that can only be completed on your blog.

These are ways you can bait people into your sphere of influence. Using humor, love and good information. Seducing your audience like a fisherman uses a lure or a worm to tantalize a big bass from under the log in the lake. He may look at it suspiciously for a few minutes, but if you don’t scare him off, he’ll bite.

Ride It Like You Stole It

As you know Lance Armstrong had a one of a kind bike stolen during one of his races this week. The guys who make his bikes didn’t waste a second getting another bike to him. They inscribed a great motivating quote on it that you just have to read:

Lance uses twitter as a way to stay in touch with the thousands of fans he has all over the world, and he receives an insane amount of motivation from those people who follow him! But he makes sure that he keeps them fed with good content, he will send out videos, blog posts and pictures like the one above that inspire.

I don’t think Lance has a strategy in his use of twitter. Instead, I believe he is genuinely interested in his fans and he allows them the chance to look into his life 140 characters at a time. When he needs to communicate more than that, he has his images, blogs and videos. His communication with twitter acts as a distribution center as it directs people to his more detailed information.

Fishing With Headlines

Your tweets should be the bait for the bigger story. Like Lance, you should be giving a glimpse into your life without revealing everything in a tweet. You should be saying to yourself as you write a status update, “take a peek, but if you want more, come to my blog, or my flickr page, etc.” Each tweet is the headline of the newspaper, and the reader can decide if it is interesting enough to follow to the website.

You can really be sneaky and see if anyone is paying attention. Start a story, and don’t give anyone a place to go to find out more. If you have done it right, you will get a lot of @replies asking you questions about what you started. Mark Joyner calls this the Zeigarnik Effect, where people have to have completeness in their lives.

On television, you see Monk always completing sequences, or putting a book back on the bookshelf to complete a series. Same as puzzles, they are so addicting, because they are incomplete. If you only give readers a couple of hints, it will drive them nuts until they get the complete story.

If you don’t want a riot, you really shouldn’t wait to complete your story until your next blog post…

Yisel Guajardo is an entrepreneur who writes about internet marketing, social media, and blogging. She authors the blog Advanced Income. You can also follow her on Twitter.

The debate hit the Internet Marketing world last week when Ed Dale announced on his blog he’s flushing most of his Facebook friends and starting fresh.

(Why did flushing, friends, and fresh just seem weird to me? Anyway.)

It really isn’t anything new, the desire to have lots of friends on the social networking sites is viewed as a type of social validation. You know, “Hey I’m cool, look at all the friends I have”.

Come on, admit it. How cool did you look on MySpace when Tom was your only friend?

Hey, I’m just saying…I’m not pointing any fingers, I fell for it too.

But this led to a mad rush to add friends as quickly as possible with friend adding software and viral gizmos and gadgets that are still prevalent to this day. Especially on Twitter.

Yet time has shown, that just like in the real world, it’s not the number of friends or followers, but who is actually listening and cares what you have to say.

You can’t fake influence. Just like men can’t fake…well, you know. It’s either there or not.

So here we are, a ton of useless friends that put in question our use of social media socially.

Huh? Well, the cartoon below says it all. Are you so busy adding friends that you are missing out on the real value of the sites you use either personally of professionally?

With over 175 million people on Facebook, as marketers we start rubbing our little hands. And yes it’s tempting. Oh yes very tempting. I mean, if Facebook were a country if would be the sixth most populated in the world! (And we don’t need a passport or have to put up with airline security.)

But Ed has a point. He says:

People who study Internet marketing intensely as we do, use Facebook completely the wrong way. Actually let me rephrase that, we do not use it the way “real people” use it.”

I’m certainly rethinking my use of Facebook. I haven’t logged in for months, simply because it was a time hog having through sift through an Inbox full of solicitations, spam, and useless conversations to find anything of value and personal.

And although I don’t know wether I’ll be flushing friends from the bathroom of my account just yet, not because I don’t want to, but because I’m too lazy to do it myself, I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer.

Its really going to boil down to answering this question for yourself: What’s my purpose for using it?

I’d love to hear from you. Especially those using Facebook both professionally and personally.
Will you be flushing your friends? How do you use Facebook and what do you get out of it?

Talk soon.

Many have foundTwitter to be a great place to get linked to many people, and many see it as a promotional wonderland. “WooHoo, look at all those people I can hit with my promotions”

Well, yes . . . and no. Let’s pull back on the reigns just a little ‘Roy Rogers’! Twitter is fast becoming a place where you can gain lots, read thousands, of people you can contact and to a good aggressive marketer, a virtual gold mine. However it doesn’t work that way, at least that’s how most Twitter users see it.

Now you can certainly jump in to Twitter and plaster your latest promotion all about with reckless abandon, but guess what? You will rapidly find a lot of ‘no follows’ – that’s unpopular in Twittereze. The reason for this is that nature of the community. Just like in ‘real life’ every community has a personality that basically dictates normal behavior. Now, like this or not, the Twitter community has sort of established itself already.

For most Twitterers, there is a balance, a fine line between promotion and socializing. Twitter has become a place to socialize and get to know people . . . and recommend. Just like any aspect of life, there is a fine line between the two major aspects of Twitter, socialization and promoting. Twitter is a place where you can get to know people of all sorts, even individual ‘big’ in an industry are there rubbing shoulders with everybody.

This is a place where you can Twit a business leader who would be otherwise difficult to contact, and where they are quite likely to respond. But . . . but as long as you are being social about it, not sales-ey! Here’s the thing, if you spend some time getting familiar with people and they you in a casual way, they will not see you as intimidating or risky to interact with. Realize that many top level people in any business get approached often by people who want something from them – don’t be that guy! Rather, have a simple question for them, or offer help or even just a comment on something that they posted.

When you do post, Tweet, in a promotional manner, make it more suggestive or helpful, not – “Hey Buy My Stuff”. Yes, you will see some of this that doesn’t make it acceptable to most. Not sure, try this – ask other Twitterers what they think about it. Just as in any marketing efforts, it’s better to gain trust, familiarity and respect from people before asking them for money. It’s important to remember that business is about relationship building. This is important with both potential customers as well as partners or joint venture partners.

So, about the fine line, the balance, many are now automatically Tweeting their blog posts and articles, which is fine, but don’t let that be all that you do there. Have a social presence as well. Sure, recommend something, but offer to help, answer a question, and just be social. You will find that with the Twitter community you will be well accepted and welcomed, people will become more interested in you and what you do. Isn’t that better in the long run than just pimping a product?

Balance on the fine line – Twit away!

He lives in Beverly Hills, FL with his family. Follow Micheal on Twitter.

If a blogger writes on the web and nobody sees it, did they actually write anything? You have to look at the way bloggers communicate to really get a feel for what I mean.

I just read a unique blog post from a good friend of mine. She sent me a direct message (DM) from twitter to alert me about it. The title intrigued me, so I went to her blog, read it and commented on it.

Social Networks are a very potent force in communication. People hear more about MySpace, Facebook and Twitter from their sitcoms, because those platforms reached a critical mass, where people can no longer ignore them unless they want to continue being completely anonymous.

But posting on social networks just for the sake of posting is like writing just to fill lines on page. If you are not providing value of some kind, nobody will read you. In many cases, people who do not provide good content become lost in the sea of information.

What is content?

Content falls into 3 major categories:

Information

Help

Entertainment

Some people on the social networks are information junkies who just need to consume facts, figures and trivia. They need a steady diet of these to keep their active minds filled with new data.

Others on the social networks have a problem that they need solved, and they look to the social community for their assistance. They might ask where something is located, they might need to find a particular person or maybe they just need to connect with someone who has a specific talent. In all of these cases, the distressed networkers can quickly sift through the responses to find the nugget that they were looking for to solve their problem.

Finally, the group of social networkers who are looking to be entertained are looking for laughter, music and videos that keep them filled with joy! So if you are a provider of entertainment value, you are going to build a large following by being entertaining.

With that said, your presence on the social networks should give people a sense that they know you. If you are using my favorite social network, Twitter, you might be telling people who you met at the latest seminar, or how you and your family are going to see a movie. While those seem like insignificant things to talk about, they are defining you to the outside world.

Being yourself is what draws people into your circle. If you try to be someone you aren’t eventually the facade will come off when people are around you and you will lose them. Much better to be yourself all the time and only attract those that like you for being you.

So when you update people on Twitter, you are giving them a slice of your day, make it count by giving your slant on the topic. Say you are ready to try out the new restaurant in town, make it an event!

“I took a chance on the new Asian Restaurant in town and was rewarded with great service!”

This tells people what you did while providing information to the info junkies. The fact that you took a chance tells people that you usually do not go to new restaurants. People who are used to staying within their established routines will look at you as a daring adventurer and may actually venture out on your recommendation.

If you just say, “I had Pork LoMein For Dinner.” You aren’t telling anyone much, and probably irritated a bunch of people with growling stomachs! Think of each of your updates as a part of your autobiography. You are writing each sentence of it with the updates you choose to post!

If all you want the world to remember about you is that you ate Pork LoMein, you will blend into the scenery with all the other meal updates the world has to offer.

Remember that your followers, friends or acquaintences in the social networks around the world have more than just you to read about. Make each update count toward them developing a relationship with you that means something. While you are reading this, your next million dollar partner or client could be looking over your tweet-stream deciding whether or not they want to press the “follow” button on your profile right now.

Make your story be the one which makes them anticipate each chapter daily. Once you start to examine what you find is important to you, your updates will show it… The life you change may be your own as you write your story one update at a time!
